Day 17 – Finally a Koala!

We were up and out by 9 this morning after square crumpets for breakfast.

First on the agenda Erskine falls, a lovely waterfall but you could only see it from the top as all of the other access trails had been damaged in the floods last month and were shut.

Next we drove back towards Lorne and had our first encounter of a kangaroo jumping out from the side of the road and going across in front of the van!

With a quick pit stop for another award winning pie and coffee – this from Grandma Shields Bakery – which we ate outside with the cockatoos hovering, we then continued to Sheoak Falls.

It was an hours walk in total to the falls and Swallow Cave and back, but worth it and we saw an echidna on route (basically a spiny anteater). It had begun to rain lightly but the temperature was still around 20 degrees.

At Cumberland River we saw some cars being extracted from the beach where they had been washed down into the sand from a local campsite during the recent floods.

A quick picture stop at Mount Defiance and then a stop at Artillery Rocks, where we clambered down and along the wierdest rock formations.

Just after 12.30 we parked up at Kennett River and had a sausage in a roll for lunch whilst watching the kangaroos, before doing the nature walk.

We’d been told this was place to see Koalas and it didn’t disappoint, after walking a mile we managed to see one asleep quite high up and then a second one walking down a tree which is quite rare to see as they sleep for around 20 hours a day. We were glad to get back in the van as the sun had come fully out and it was getting very hot.

We then drove straight to Apollo Bay admiring the rugged coastal scenery as we drove. Around 3 we headed straight into the town to reserve a table for dinner but was told it would be ok to just turn up later.

It was now pouring again so we quickly found The Great Ocean Road Brewhouse (most southernmost pub on mainland Australia) for a quick pot and schooner (half pint and 3/4 pint).

We then drove back to the start of town to check in at our campsite for the night. The weather had really turned quite rainy so we stayed in the van and read for a while.

Around 5.30 the weather brightened again so we walked into town to Apollo Fisherman Co-op for a fish and chip dinner (which was quite yummy) we then went back to the Brewhouse for a couple of drinks whilst playing pool (argh – I lost) before walking back in the dark to the campsite, the sky had now cleared and the view of the stars amazing.
