Day 13 – Up in the Sky(e)

We woke to a fantastic outlook over the Inner Sound,  brilliant blue skies, no clouds and the sun already up. So the weather was on our side for the epic crossing today.

After a lightish breakfast, we set off around 9.30 and it was a 30 min exhilarating drive over the famous Bealach Na Ba (or Applecross Pass). Thankfully we only met less than half a dozen vehicles on the very narrow single track road which rises to 2053ft and has gradients of 1 in 5. The views were to die for!

Back on flatter ground we made a quick detour to Strome Castle, a ruin on the shore edge but how picturesque.

We then drove on to Lochcarron, a pretty white village along the loch edge, we then continued around Loch Carron until we came to a view point opposite where we had been at Strome Castle. Breathtaking.

Onwards to Plockton a little seaside village. Such a cute little place, we had a walk around and then grabbed a portion of chips to eat overlooking the loch.

We were now only 15mins away from the Isle of Skye, after stopping for a picture of The Skye Bridge once we had crossed it, we had an hour and a half drive to our first destination on Skye, Dunvegan Castle.

We spent a lovely 2 hours wandering around the castle and extensive gardens as well taking a little boat trip out to see the seals, all in glorious sunshine. With the temperatures in the mid 20’s, it is so different to last week and Scotland is finally getting it’s annual week of summer!

With a couple of little detours we saw the Fairy Bridge and then I directed Dave to ‘The Lookout’ it was only once we got there I realized it was actually a B & B called that but it did have an amazing view so not quite a wasted journey.

Around half five we checked into our accommodation for the next 2 nights and unloaded the car. With a quick freshen up we headed to a hotel/restaurant about 10mins away for our evening meal.

After our very nice meal we headed back to The Edinbane Inn where we are staying for a nightcap or two.

    • Weather is now unreal, can’t believe we had base layers and bobble hats on last week, now sunglasses and just t-shirts and topping up the sun cream every few hours!
