Day 10 – Wet through – twice!

After a very nice night’s sleep, Dave cooked egg and toast for breakfast and we were off by 8.45.

We left the North coast and were heading over to the West coast, it was another grey, damp and misty morning and the landscape was rugged and barren, you definitely felt quite isolated here, no houses or farms around.

With a couple of stops for pictures we made it across to Scourie Beach and harbour in just over an hour. the rain was quite heavy now as we continued to Klyesku Bridge. We had to get out the car here to take a few pics of this famous bridge and we were only out of the car for about 5 mins before we were soaked through.

We decided to miss our first planned waterfall walk and continue on to Drumberg where we had a hot chocolate stop in The Secret Tea Garden and managed to change our wet trousers.

We made it to Clashnessie and with a little break in the weather, decided to walk to the waterfall, oh my it was extremely boggy and muddy and we had to go off route as you are meant to cross a river but it was just too high. We made it to the falls and got a few pics before the rain came again in earnest and it was an extremely soggy walk back the car.

Next stop Lochinver, as it was Sunday it appears everything is shut, little supermarkets and stores, cafes everything, eventually we found a store open a little off the normal track and bought a pack of ham and crisps to make a sarnie in the car for our very late lunch at 3 o’clock but at least the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come out as we ate it overlooking Loch Inver.

Our final planned stop was Ardvreck Castle on a little peninsula in Loch Assynt, we parked up and began walking to it, unfortunately the Loch level was very high and you now had to wade to it! Still not having dried out from our previous soakings we took our pictures from a distance and then found a little waterfall nearby.

On finally arriving in Ullapool we found our accommodation, which I had been worrying about as it was a hotel/bunkhouse/bookstore/cafe/bar and restaurant but was pleasantly surprised.

After a quick very hot shower and fresh clothes we set off to find the sights (bars) of Ullapool having already prebooked dinner back at our accommodation for 7.30.

Dinner was yum and we then took a drink into the cosy fire-lit lounge and swapped some tales with a pair of ladies also enjoying nightcaps in there.

It appears we weren’t the only ones to get soaked today! See the last picture for footwear roasting by an open fire.

I’ve added a pic at end of next set of accommodation.
