Day 12 – Penguin day

Waking around 8, we showered, had a leisurely breakfast of toast and rice cakes (Izzy) before packing everything away and leaving the site.

First stop, empty all the water and top up with fresh then it was onto Lilly Pilly Gully (still in Wilson’s Promontory NP which fyi is 195 square miles) for a little walk.

We set off on The Lilly Pilly Gully walk which started very nice and flat, at the end of it we then did the boardwalk circuit, as we had made such good time we decided to do the full loop back to the start. Well it wasn’t long into it that myself and Izzy were doubting our choice – it was all uphill! We reckon we did about 1 mile uphill before coming down again but the whole walk took an impressive 1.5 hours against there guideline of 2 hours and we also saw our first snake and wallaby on route.

With a quick biscuit break we were back on the road, Izzy informed us that the new Harry Styles album had just been released, like in the last hour, so we hooked her phone up and had the pleasure of listening to it in its entirety.

Around half way to Philip Island we stopped at the beach in Inverloch and made a quick lunch from the left over sausages from last night and ate it on a bench by the beach.

After a little walk along the beach and an impromptu 2 minute gym session at the outdoor gym, we set back off following the Bunurong coastal road.

An hour or so later we crossed the bridge onto Philip Island with another small detour into the Chocolate Factory for a free sample, we continued to our campsite.

Eventually we found our pitch (I had a little trouble with their map)  We didn’t set anything up as we were due to go out tonight for the penguin parade.

So after a quick recce of the site we headed to the Philip Island Brewery just outside the campsite for a drink and an early dinner.

Worried about the timings for tonight we collectively decided to walk back to the van and leave straight away. It was only a 20min drive and we were glad we did as there were already a lot of cars in the car park. We didn’t have long to wait until they opened the doors and we made our way down to the beach and managed to get front row. We now only had an hour and ten minutes to kill before the penguins did their thing and parade on the beach, so to kill some time we did one of Izzy’s crosswords with her and then a word search and then a sudoku!

It was absolutely freezing with the sea breeze but eventually the tiniest of penguins started making their way out of the sea and waddling (very slowly) up the beach and then up into the vegetation. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take any pictures as the penguins have very sensitive eyes. Approx 600 come to shore every night of the year.

After a while we went back up onto the boardwalks where you could then see the penguins making themselves comfy for the night in the long grass.

We were back at camp around 10 and quickly put the kettle on for a tea/rum to warm up. With a video call to mum and dad, then a few more puzzles from Izzy’s book, we turned in around 11 for our early start tomorrow.
