Day 20 –  Trains, boats and Ubers- Thursday 29th Feb

Up at 6.30, out at 7 to catch an Uber to transport us to the ferry terminal for our 7.45 check in.  Another drizzly morning but thankfully no wind.

The sailing was very smooth (so no CAS!) and we met a lovely couple of ladies, Shona and Carolina (native NZ’s) who were on a little road trip of the south island as well and gave us some tips and places to visit.

Having arrived at Picton we made our way to the train station, we were told our luggage would go straight to Kaikouri so we managed to have a quick pint prior to boarding.

Wow what a fabulous journey, the sun fully out for the first half of the journey and we were seated right next to the viewing carriage. Had a table seat opposite Barry and Doreen from the UK so we enjoyed a chat with them along the trip.

Arrived at Kaikouri and by magic our cases appeared out of one of the carriages, we found a shuttle bus to drop us at the hotel.  Checked in at the Sudima and we were off for a walk to explore this little quiet sea-side resort.

After a 2.5 mile walk we had a quick drink at the Strawberry Tree before moving on to the Whaler for a fishy dinner. Got chatting to an Aussie guy from Brisbane (called Bruce of course) who was also doing a tour of NZ and then a lovely couple also from Oz who we had a good laugh with.

Then a quick walk back to the hotel ready for another early start tomorrow!
