Day 3 – Higher and Higher.

Breakfast at 8.30. The lifts open at 9 but the ski schools also start at 9 so we thought we’d let the rush go. With the sun coming up over the mountain we set off at 9.30.

We stopped for hot chocolate and chips after 2.5 hours of skiing. We had a great table out in the sun overlooking the towns below. We had skied 7 runs and been up to 2300 metres and covered just over 9 miles. We had also taken a pretty scary drag lift with a 50% gradient that went on forever! The slopes were still fairly empty even with a few ski school lessons going on. The lifts also clear only occasionally having to share with others.

We thought we would go up to the viewpoint this afternoon, so set off to take a further 2 chairlifts up to 2800 metres. The view of Mount Cenis Lake was spectacular. We then skied back to where we had been this morning to ski the epic Escargot run, albeit only a green run, it is the longest green run in Europe at just over 10km and finishes at the hotel. That bought our afternoon tally to almost 12 miles and 21 for the day. I think we can say our ski legs are back!

Back at the hotel we tried the swimming pool out (a bit on the cold side) but luckily there was also a very warm Jacuzzi which was extremely nice to relax in and use the jets for a bit of a massage.

After showering and changing it was a short walk into town for a meal at the Napoleon. Would definitely recommend eating here, it was lucky we had booked as they were turning people away. The reviews are not to be believed, in that they don’t like English tourists. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and explained that the cheese in my dish had been made close to the lake at Mount Cenis. We finished off the meal with a free glass of schnapps (a non-alcoholic one for me) and headed back to the hotel.
