Day 30 – Exploring KI

Well that was quite a warm night, we didn’t want to open the door as there were so many bugs outside and didn’t want them coming in but we needn’t have worried about little bugs because when we got up there was a big Huntsman Spider in the living room anyway! Dave had to use a jug to get it outside.

So after that little scare, we showered, had some scrambled eggs and mushrooms on toast for breakfast and packed the rucksack.

We travelled on the North Coast Road (more like a dirt track) and the first picture stop was Snelling Beach – beautiful and then we had some stunning views looking back across the island as we made our way inland.

After 45mins we made it back to the highway with some proper tarmac and then onto The Flinders Chase Visitors Centre. We thought we had to pay an entry fee for the National Park but it had been waived until 6th April. A lovely lady gave us some advice on where to head and what to see, so we grabbed a drink and set off.

First stop Rocky River to do a quick mile walk along the Heritage Trail, where we managed to see some kangaroos, wallabies and 2 koalas. We have yet to spot a koala on our own so we were actively looking today, we hadn’t passed a single sole then out of the blue we saw another couple who pointed the koalas out to us!

Next a drive and a walk at the Platypus Pools to see if we can see one of these elusive creatures but no luck, but we did see a fairly large lizard thing!

It was now 1.00 so we headed towards the Cape du Couedic lighthouse, took some pictures and continued to Admirals Arch. We first ate our egg sarnies that we’d made, then walked down the boardwalk to the arch. This was definitely most impressive and we saw quite a lot of seals laying on the rocks here as well.

The next stop was Remarkable Rocks, they sure had a lot to live up to having seen the arch!

Ok, they were very very remarkable, so huge and you could climb all over them. Our timing was a bit off here, up to now we had been really lucky with tourists and everything very quite but as we arrived here so did 3 coach loads of people. We managed to overtake most of them on the walk up to the rocks so hopefully we have some decent pictures with not too many people in!

Then onto Vivonne Bay, we grabbed a cold drink from the shop and set off down to the beach. Now it was a splendid beach, white sand, waves crashing in and we did sit there for all of 10 minutes but we just wanted to get back to our own secluded beach so we set off for the 50 minute drive back across the island.

So by 5.15 we were back on our beach with our books and a beer, just chilling and even getting Dave in the sea for a swim with the sun going down. Total paradise.

Eventually we pulled ourselves away and Dave cooked steak, corn and potatoes for dinner.
