Day 3 – Looks like reindeer!

After another lovely night’s sleep we woke an hour later at 8.30 for breakfast at 9. It had snowed quite a bit overnight and the snowploughs had been out and about.

There was a moderate wind warning in place, it was going to be -1 but feeling like -6 and the sun may make an appearance for a max 1.5 hours if we’re lucky.

At 10 we gathered outside reception as today we were booked in for the reindeer day by snowmobile.  Unfortunately even though there was quite a lot of snow the trail to the reindeer farm was not yet open so they arranged to bus us there instead. It was only a short drive and then we were there. First we had an open reindeer sleigh ride and then we were allowed to feed the reindeer and learn a little about them.

We were then taken into a very cosy hut with a fire blazing for some hot chocolate and cake, whilst a Sami lady in full costume gave an interesting talk about reindeer and their way of life both historic and in modern times.

Worried that some of us may be still hungry, they bussed us back to reception so we could get lunch before saying we could get on the snowmobiles in an hours time.

At 1.30 we regrouped, after getting our helmets and a brief safety talk we were off. Unfortunately there were 15 snowmobiles compared to only 4 last night so it was a bit slow going. Having said that, I started off driving but really didn’t enjoy it, I felt I was fighting with the steering and it was going quite fast (ironic with how fast Dave says I drive my car!) so we swapped drivers. After a couple of hours we returned back to base.

Going back to our room, a massive birthday cake and champagne had been delivered for Dave’s birthday so we had some cake with a cup of tea and coffee whilst waiting for the champagne to chill in the fridge.

As we had no activities planned for tonight we decided to dress up for dinner and go over to reception early to play some games. Dave won Jaipur once we had remembered how to play it.

We then had dinner (pork cheeks or chicken) before settling down with a ‘swampbog’ a Jameson based cocktail to play some more games before heading back to our cabin.
