The alarm was at 7.30 this morning, after showering and dressing we left the hotel at 8.40 for the short walk to the bus station. After a little confusion trying to locate the correct underground platform (it was Good Friday – so a few of the entrances were closed) we got there with 10 mins to spare.
Our journey today was out to Geebung to meet up with Dave’s cousin Garry, who lives here and to visit his mum (Lyla) in a care home there.
We arrived at 10, Garry was already there and had given us instructions to find the room. It was lovely to see Lyla who didn’t look her 95 years of age and she seemed genuinely pleased to finally see us, as she has lived here since 1972.
After a few hours we left Lyla to her fish n chips lunch and headed back to the bus stop, with plans to see Garry in the city tomorrow as most places were shut today.
The bus arrived promptly and took us back to the bus station where we swapped buses to go over to South Bank to a restaurant which was serving Moreton bay bugs so thought that would be perfect for lunch.
We decided on a fresh Moreton bay bug as well as bugs in bao buns (which were yummy) and some wedges which we ate whilst watching the citycats and kittycats (smaller version) go up and down the river. We have noticed a lot that restaurants and bars put on 10 or 15% on the bills for public holidays and Sundays!
Next a slight change of plan we walked around to The Star Hotel, where there is viewing deck 27 floors up. Although a little bit cloudy, it was an amazing view.
We then walked to the ferry terminal and caught a citycat which took us all the way upstream to St. Lucia before turning around and heading back. We then continued on the boat until it went as far downstream at Hamilton. Completely unaware of the time whilst we had been admiring the views, we realised we’d been on the boat for 2 hours!
Just before the boat docked we saw a lively venue on the shoreside, a quick Google informed us it was Eat Street Northshore, a nightly food market set in a disused container wharf. So we alighted to have a bit to eat there. It was quite big with 4 stages with live music and over 50 stalls selling food and drink. Unfortunately because it was Good Friday, there was no alcohol on sale! We settled for lamb yiros in pitta bread which was remarkably tasty, washed down with a coke whilst listening to a dodgy trio killing the songs from the 80’s all with a reggae backing track!
Just after 7 we walked back to the ferry to get the citycat back and had a 15 min wait, it would take almost an hour door to door so to speak.
Just before 8.30 we sat in the bar to order another of our free pints, to be told they couldn’t serve alcohol today without food (apparently a law across all Queensland) so we had to settle for a free coffee and tea!
With a little read in bed it was lights out at 10 in preparation for tomorrow morning.
