Day 6 – As far north as you can go.

Woke up to brilliant sunshine which was very deceiving when the temperature was only about 8 degrees.  After a full Scottish breakfast including lorne sausage and black pudding we set off just after 9.

First on the agenda today, the Berridale foot suspension bridge. This is probably one of the most unsafe looking bridges we have decided to cross just for the hell of it!

Next, Hill O’ Many Stanes. As the name says lots of ‘very small’ stones dotted around on a hill – it raises many questions, the number 1 being: why did we stop for this one!

Only 10 mins up the road the 365 steps of Whaligoe. Didn’t take too long at all to descend and climb back up and the setting was fantastic albeit in the rain.

Further north we pulled off the road just before Wick to check out the Old Castle of Wick, obviously a ruin but right on the cliff edge.

A quick pit stop in Wick to fill the car up and a scone for DC and a soup for myself in Mackays Hotel which happens to be on Ebenezer Place which is the world’s smallest street at just over 2 metres long.

Next a short drive followed by a little walk to Castle Sinclaire. It was blowing a hoolie but at least the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come out. Must have been amazing in its day.

The final push to John O’Groats, still as windy so after the obligatory photo by the sign we nipped in the pub to say we’ve drunk in the most northerly pub in Britain.

As the rain was holding off we decided to pop back to Duncansby Lighthouse and the stacks, so glad we did, very dramatic scenery and this is the most north eastly point on the UK. With plenty of time to spare we decided to fit in a last POI being Dunnet Head which is the most northerly point on the mainland but OMG, we’ve never been in wind like it, so fierce.

We then found our garden room where we are staying the night overlooking Dunnet Bay but unfortunately because of the wind and rain we weren’t able to get down on the beach tonight.

After putting in our breakfast order, Dave popped out to get a curry for dinner (basically the only takeaway option for miles).

I’ve added a final picture of our accommodation upto now.
