Day 6 – Departure day from the most amazing winter wonderland

Even though the sky was clear last night we only saw stars from the cabins glass roof, which in itself was quite amazing.  You could quite clearly see The Plough and it was cool seeing it move around the sky during the night.

It was chilly in the morning when we woke and Dave had quite clearly got too used to the underfloor heating of the log cabin, now using a pair of cushions under his feet to walk around!

Having given our clothing back last night the walk over to breakfast in our normal clothing albeit with some layers, hats and gloves was freezing, it showed how good the all in ones and boots were.  The temperature showed -22.

After breakfast we grabbed the sledges and headed back to the Aurora cabin to get our cases.

With a final few pictures we headed back to reception and handed the keys back. It was beginning to get light and it was weird to think in less than a week the sun wouldn’t come up over the horizon for over a month. They would just get a twilight around midday.

Like clockwork the transfer arrived on time and we left for the airport at 10.30 only slowed down by a little herd of raindeer walking along one of the main roads.

The time passed quite quickly and before we knew it we were boarding the first plane. Even though it was the first departure of the day, loading took longer than expected and we did leave a little late. The flight took 1 hour 20, with just enough time for a hot chocolate and a little read before landing at Helsinki.

Helsinki airport is huge with at least a 20min walk between gates, so with our next flight already boarding we were once again fast tracked though passport control to make it on time.

The second flight took off in time and we killed the time with another hot chocolate, a snooze and a read!

Landing at just gone 5, with no queues at passport control and our luggage off early we were on a train home just after 5.30 and finally home just after 7.30

What a perfect winter adventure that was!
