Days 20 and 21 – Time for a chill weekend – well after Parkrun of course!

The alarm was set for 7.15, with a quick wash we changed into our running gear and set off for the 5 min walk to the start of Parkrun. I had on purpose selected this campsite for its proximity to Lake Pertobe where the park run began and finished.

We started at 8 and with the sun breaking through the clouds it began to get quite warm. There were only four of us from the UK running and it was my 50th Parkrun. Dave came in 29th at 24.30 and I came in 116th at 33.59.

A 5 min walk back to the campsite and we still had time for showers and breakfast before leaving the site at 10.30.

With not much planned for today and only a 20 min drive to the next stop at Port Fairy where we were going to stay for 3 nights, we took a slow drive and detoured off the main road to view The Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve which is inside a dormant volcano.

Arriving in Port Fairy, although the sun was out there was a very strong breeze keeping the temperature down so our planned sit on the beach for a while turned into a walk along South Beach and then onto Pea Soup Beach. Around 1 we knocked up some lunch and ate it next to the van getting a bit of shelter at Pea Soup.

With a check in time from 2 we decided to head to the site, on arrival I changed our location from the Southside which was soo busy to a plot Northside with a view of the Moyne River and nobody else around us!

Still being so blustery we took advantage of it and did 2 loads of washing, which we hung out for a while then finished drying everything in the van with an improvised washing line strung up between the 2 front doors.

We tried reading outside but it was a bit too cold so we had a walk into town to pass the time. On our return, Dave cooked us burgers and then we settled into the van for the night and put the heater on, whilst drinking some rum and coke.

With no rush to get up, we laid in till 8, Dave caught up on last night’s Arsenal match (another win) while I showered.

By 10 and with the sun shining and the winds from yesterday abated we left the site on foot, with a bit of a long walk planned. First into town, then down to see the footbridge over Moyne River, along the wharf and then onto and around Griffiths Island to see the lighthouse and some of the 10,000 Mutton Bird which live here. Then onto the chip shop (to fill our pre-made buttered rolls) for lunch, then back into town to see some of the oldest buildings along the GOR. (Albeit we have technically finished the 150 mile stretch which started at Torquay and finished just before Warrnambool) With tired legs we skipped the remainder of the buildings and had a schooner of beer in the garden of The Stump, holding the oldest continually licensed pub in Victoria. Heading back to our site we detoured to have a walk along East beach having walked just over 7 miles in total.

With the weather turning a little worse we had a read in the van, before tidying up a little and prepping dinner. This time sausage, mash and beans which we had to eat in the van.

After washing up and another read it was time for bed.
